The ACT is a standardised college admissions test administered by ACT Inc., scored on a composite scale of 1–36 across four sections: English (75 questions, 45 minutes), Mathematics (60 questions, 60 minutes), Reading (40 questions, 35 minutes), and Science (40 questions, 35 minutes). An optional Writing (Essay) section is required by some universities.

Common questions about our tutoring services
Almost never, and this is the most important thing for students to understand before starting ACT prep. The ACT Science section tests data interpretation: reading graphs, understanding experimental design, comparing conflicting viewpoints. A student who has never studied Biology can score 36 on ACT Science if they can read and interpret data quickly. Students with strong science backgrounds sometimes score lower because they spend time recalling knowledge instead of just reading the passage.
Both are accepted at virtually all US universities. We offer students a diagnostic of each before committing to a full preparation programme. The ACT tends to suit students who are strong in maths, comfortable with fast-paced questions, and can read data quickly. The SAT tends to suit students who are stronger readers and find the more contextualised maths questions more natural.
Only if your target universities require it, and the list is shorter than it used to be. Most US universities no longer require the ACT Writing score for general admissions. However, some specific programmes (particularly journalism, education, and certain liberal arts schools) still list it as required or recommended. Check your specific target university list before deciding whether to add the Writing section. We coach it if needed.
The ACT can be taken as many times as you like. Most US universities accept Superscore (taking the best section score from multiple attempts) or simply consider your best composite. We generally recommend students plan for two attempts: a baseline attempt early in Grade 11 or 12, and a second targeted attempt after a full preparation programme. Some students take a third attempt if the score gap to their target is still significant.
While the ACT lists it as optional, many STEM, Pre-Med, and Engineering programs will still strongly recommend or require it. If you take the Science section, you receive a standalone Science score and a STEM score (the average of your Math and Science results). We help families look at their target college lists to decide if the Science section is a strategic necessity for their applications.
